We undeniably live in the age of information, and this naturally affects the field of medicine. Today, it is completely common to turn to Google before a medical procedure to research potential risks or the expected recovery time.

Unfortunately, this has a downside: we often encounter half-truths that breed anxiety and uncertainty. In the first part of our series, we examine the most common myths surrounding breast augmentation.

1. You Can Breastfeed with Implants

One of the most common myths is that natural infant feeding is impossible after breast augmentation. In reality, no harmful substances pass from the implant into the baby's system. The glandular tissue and milk ducts remain intact during the procedure, so there is no obstacle to breastfeeding.

2. In Case of a Rupture, the Silicone Stays in Place

With older implants from 20–30 years ago, it was possible for liquid silicone to spread through the body if the shell ruptured. With modern cohesive (form-stable) silicone gel fillings used today, this can no longer happen. Furthermore, "silicone bleeding" (leakage), which was relatively common in earlier generations of implants, is not characteristic of modern versions.

3. Breast Surgery Does Not Rule Out Mammograms

It is a fact that an implant affects the examination, but for an experienced specialist with the right equipment, X-raying augmented breasts is not a problem. However, it is essential to inform the staff before the exam that you have undergone breast augmentation.

4. Implants Generally Require Replacement Every 10–15 Years

Manufacturers of the most modern, top-quality implants may offer a "lifetime warranty," but upon closer inspection, this often refers to the expected "life" of the implant (usually 10 years) rather than the patient's lifespan. Generally speaking, breast prostheses should be replaced after 15 years at the latest. Annual check-ups are essential, and in the event of any abnormality, a replacement may be necessary sooner.
