Breast surgery is not a privilege reserved solely for women; there is a growing interest among men as well. In our experience, members of the "stronger sex" most often decide on surgery because their chest has taken on a bothersomely feminine shape. However, there is no cause for concern: at our plastic surgery clinic, abnormal enlargement (gynecomastia) can be treated gently and permanently.
Why Does Gynecomastia Develop?
For some men, breast enlargement is simply a matter of genetic constitution—symptoms can appear as early as adolescence. For others, changes in breast size are due to hormonal imbalances, though certain dietary supplements and steroid-based products can also play a role in the development of gynecomastia.
Taking Steps Toward a Masculine Chest
Prior to plastic surgery, it is advisable to undergo an ultrasound examination to get a precise picture of the tissue composition and the severity of the condition. This is followed by a consultation where we discuss the surgical methods and potential risks.
Liposuction: If the enlargement consists purely or predominantly of fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be sufficient.
Excision: In cases of glandular enlargement, surgical removal of the gland is necessary.
Mild vs. Severe Cases: In milder cases, the glandular tissue is removed without the need for skin excision. In more severe cases, excess skin removal or even a lift—similar to female breast surgery—may be required. These more complex procedures are always performed under general anesthesia.
Combined Approach: In exceptional cases, a combination of both liposuction and excision leads to the ideal result.
Recovery and Results
Based on our patients' reports, the procedures we perform involve only minor discomforts, such as bruising or a sensation of tightness.
Compression Garment: During the rehabilitation period (approximately 1 month), wearing a compression vest is recommended. In the days following surgery, this reduces the possibility of post-operative bleeding and later helps the skin adhere evenly to the new contours.
Healing Time: Full recovery takes about 6 weeks, depending on the individual and the specific surgical method used.
